What are the areas in a Modular Kitchen?

A Modular kitchen at your home has three main areas where most of the activities happen:

  • - Cooking area (hob, oven and microwave),
  • - Washing area (the sink)
  • - Storage area (cupboards, fridge and freezer).

These three critical areas create the work area in your kitchen. It is very important to optimize this area, where most of the tasks are done daily in the kitchen. Ideally, none should be more than two or three steps away from each other. As a general rule, the distance between the three areas of the kitchen work triangle is between 5 to 8 ft. If the distance is too small, the kitchen can feel cramped, and if too large, it makes the cooking process tedious. Keeping the right distance cuts down on wasted steps and makes the kitchen easy to use and efficient.

What are my options for storage space in my kitchen?

The fridge, microwave, wet grinder, mixers and others are more flexible appliances, which need to be placed while designing the layout of storage zone. There is nothing like enough storage when it comes to kitchens, but optimized storage can be designed based on the available space and budget.

  • (1) Floor/Base units: These are located below the counter top and are ideal for heavy utensils. They also consist of drawers and pull out accessories that can store other utensils as well. If needed, Gas Cylinder can also be placed in one of the appropriate base unit.
  • (2) Wall Units: These come in a variety of shapes and sizes with and without shelves. Open shelf & spice rack units can be considered to store frequently used spices like salt, tea and coffee. Wooden or Aluminum Framed glass shutters add aesthetics to the Kitchen.
  • (3) Tall Units: They are ideal for storing snacks, groceries and condiments. Tall units can also be used to accommodate OTG, Microwaves and accessories.
  • (4) Lofts are placed right on top of wall units and are usually utilized for the things that you need the least in everyday cooking. From boxes to big vessels, the loft can hold bigger items. They can also be used to provide overhead lighting.

What are the different options of storage space in Floor/Base Cabinets?

Base cabinets are the cabinets which are installed under the countertop, which is at a height of around 830mm. We offer various options for you to effectively use the storage space in base cabinets:

  • (a) Fixed Width Cabinets - which are the cabinets that will have accessories installed inside them for specific usage. You can read more details about accessories in subsequent questions.
  • (b) Variable Width Cabinets – The width of these cabinets can vary depending on the selection of fixed cabinets and can have either 1 or 2 doors depending on the width of each cabinet. The storage space inside these cabinets can be provided by shelves or tandem drawers.
  • (c) Under the Sink Cabinet – This cabinet is provided under the sink and can have either one or two doors depending on the size of the sink.
  • (d) Corner Cabinets – Corner cabinets can either have shelves, or can be used to store Gas Cylinder or be fitted with corner accessories.

What are the important measurements in an ergonomically designed modular kitchen?

Following are the best guidelines for efficient modular kitchens :

  • The optimal height of the counter top is 33“ (840mm) for medium height users and 34-1/4” (870mm) for taller users from the floor.
  • - The distance between counter top and wall unit is 24” (2 ft or 610mm). Hence the wall tile should be installed for 610mm above the countertop.
  • - The standard depth of the countertop is 24” or 2 feet.
